SCO to hold anti-terrorism exercise

Bishkek, June 14 / Kabar /. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization will hold anti-terrorism exercises in Kazakhstan on Thursday. They will be hosted by Kazakhstan and assisted by Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The other three members, China, Russia and Uzbekistan will be observing. Xinhua reports.

The aim of the game focuses on eliminating terrorism groups in densely populated areas, stop acts of terror and save hostages. Now let’s review some of the past major exercises.

In October 2002, troops from China and Kyrgyzstan held a joint counter-terrorism exercise in their border area near the Irkeshtam Pass in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. It was the first joint military exercise under the SCO framework. In August 2002, an expanded exercise was undertaken by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, named "Joint 2003". It was held in Kazakhstan’s border city of Ucharal and the city of Yining in China’s Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

From then on the scale of the drills under the SCO became larger and involved more troops including ground, navy and air forces.

In September 2010, "Peace Mission 2010" was staged in Kazakhstan. About 5,000 troops from China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan participated. It was the SCO’s first multilateral military exercise after heads of the six member states decided in 2007 to hold them regularly.

The June 2012 exercise in Tajikistan saw all member states participate. Over 2,000 soldiers took part in "Peace Mission 2012"; its goal was improving joint counter terrorism capabilities and enhancing strategic trust.

The core function and priority of the organization since its inception has been to combat terrorism, separatism and extremism and safeguard regional stability.

Experts say the SOC is not a military alliance and it does not target any third party. It will not develop into a NATO-like organization of the east.
