US Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan makes a statement on International Human Rights Day

Bishkek, December 9 / Kabar /. US Ambassador to Kyrgyzstan Sheila Gwaltney made a statement on International Human Rights Day.

“December 10th marks International Human Rights day. On this day, nearly seventy years ago, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. For the first time in history, a document outlined a set of rights afforded to individuals based not on their citizenship, age, or gender, but on the simple virtue of being human. As our two nations celebrate 25 years of diplomatic relations, we reflect upon the common core values that have made our relationship strong. Respect for human rights and our commitment to uphold them are key among those values.

December 10 also concludes the 16 Days of Activism campaign, which vividly illustrates that women’s rights are human rights. Preventing and responding to gender-based violence is a cornerstone of the U.S. Government’s commitment to advancing broad-based human rights, as is promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls throughout the world. The U.S. and the Kyrgyz Republic are strong partners in this effort. Together, we are encouraging the Kyrgyz Republic’s long-term competitiveness by supporting the development of strong women leaders in a range of fields including, among others, government, law enforcement, engineering, and mathematics.

Gender-based violence in all countries will only end when women and girls are fully valued by their societies. As our Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues said, "advancing the status of women and girls worldwide is not only the right thing to do, but the smart thing to do," the statement says.
