7 thousand beneficiaries in Osh oblast will have an access to irrigation water with the support of U.S. Government

Bishkek, May 25 / Kabar /. On May 26, 2012, the United States Government through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Local Development Program, will open the rehabilitated Tash-Koroo irrigation canal in Zulpuev municipality. This canal will give more than 7,000 beneficiaries access to irrigation water in time for this year’s farming season. The opening event will be held in Zulpuev municipality, Nookat district, Osh province at 10:00 a.m.

Due to the poor condition of the canal, 184.2 hectares of land have gone uncultivated and 292.4 hectares have had insufficient irrigation. USAID worked with the Water Users Association and Zulpuev municipality to install 16 sluice gates to regulate the flow of water, rehabilitate 5.1 km of the most crucial parts of the canal, and restore the aqueduct. The rehabilitated canal will support the local economy and will in turn boost the efficiency of local self-government.

The opening ceremony will be attended by officials from the Osh Province Administration, Nookat District Administration, USAID Assistant Administrator for Asia Nisha Biswal, USAID Kyrgyz Republic Country Representative Carey Gordon, and USAID Local Development Program Deputy Chief of Party Chynara Arapova.
