New social facilities open in Karakol

New social facilities open in Karakol

12 May 2016 opening ceremony of the sports ground and the gender development center took place in Karakol.

The gender center aims to help women in their social and psychological adaptation, provide them with leadership, entrepreneurial skills and legal aid.

Launching of the gender center in Karakol is based on the fact that 50% of population are women. However, the majority of women belong to socially vulnerable group of the population: unemployed, single mothers, mothers of large families, women exposed to domestic violence. Different clubs for leisure activities will be functioning in the center: computer courses, dancing evenings, felt products making, embroidery and knitting courses, trainings on gender equity and life-skills, seminars devoted to reproductive health.

“Gender centre is essential for Karakol. Now there is a place where women can come and communicate. I would like to expess my gratitude to all people involved in this process-members of gender council of Karakol, Karakol Mayors Office, UNDP staff,” - said in her welcoming speech Rita Borbukeeva, Deputy Government Representative in Issyk-Kul oblast.

Two social facilities were launched due to a round of consultations and a collaboration between Karakol Mayor Office, Karakol Kenesh representatives, members of gender advisory board of the city of Karakol, city female activists, community entities, Karakol youth and citizens, “Pristan” inspectors. Joint discussion displayed the necessity of the female center and the sport ground for “Pristan”, which is located far from the city.

The sports ground was launched in “Pristan” urban-type settlement, which is in Karakol administrative unit. There are no places in “Pristan” for leisure activities, such as sports clubs, creative and educating organizations, due to several reasons: Pristan’s remoteness from the city center and low socioeconomic status. Unemployment, social isolation and lack of confidence towards state bodies lead to conflicts among young people, including ethnic grounds conflicts.

“I've been playing football since I was a child. Before opening a new sport playground we played football on a home-made field for mini-football. The name of our football team is “Neftebaza” and I hope that we will win many tournaments,” told Kudaubergen Kurmangaliev, 11th grade student of school #7 in “Pristan”.

Erlan Aisarakunov, Head of city council in Karakol, Rita Borbukeeva, Deputy Government Representative in Issyk-Kul oblast, Akylsaira Djumabekova, Vise mayor of Karakol and deputies of the State Council participated in the ceremony.

The gender center and the sports ground were launched within the project “Strengthening capacities of the local self-governance for peacebuilding” and supported by UNDP/UNICEF funds in the total amount of KGS 2,703,750 with Karakol City Hall contribution in the amount of KGS 723,128.
