Karakol hosted the launch of the March of Parks-2015

Bishkek, May 6 / Kabar /. On April 28, Karakol city hosted the launch of the March of Parks-2015. This event takes place every year in April in many countries across the world to celebrate the World Earth Day and raise awareness about the problems of specially protected nature areas (SPNA). March of Parks includes a variety of events including contests, interactive lessons, workshops and outdoor activities. This year’s event is devoted to soils as valuable natural heritage.

The opening of the eco-action took place at Children’s Educational Center in Teploklyuchenka village of Ak-suu district with a workshop supported by UNDP-GEF project on specially protected areas in Central Tien-Shan. During the workshop, schoolchildren, teachers and local residents learned about importance of protected areas and why they are protected.

According to the coordinator of the project Nazgul Turdumatova, enhancing environmental awareness and understanding of the value of biodiversity among population is key to conserving biodiversity.

«In this sense, March of Parks is a great opportunity for us to show people how important it is to care for natural environment and save the nature of Issyk-Kul”, she said.

The workshop included lectures about the role of specially protected nature areas, presentation of the book “Following the footsteps of snow leopard”, interactive ecological lessons, performances and training games. UNDP also announced an essay contest “The World of Preserved Nature” the results of which will be announced on 22 May.

Environmental activities were also organize in Ak-Suu orphanage, where children took part in interactive games on environmental theme, asphalt painting contests and poster and intellectual games. Winning teams were awarded with prizes, gifts and certificates.

March of Parks will continue until May 22. High school and university students of Karakol and a number of rural districts of Ak-Suu district will take part in a number of events as part of the campaign. “Environmental Troops” will be deployed in Karakol State Nature Park to plant trees and clean up the park. Students will also attend special lectures about the role of biodiversity and specially protected areas in the lives of people.

UNDP-GEF Improving Coverage and Efficiency of Specially Protected Areas Management in Central Tien-Shan Project aims at nearly doubling the habitat area of snow leopards in Central Tien-Shan through creating of state nature park “Khan-Tengri” and strengthening of overall SPNA system.
