Over 600 families in Naryn gained access to reliable power supply

Bishkek, March 16 / Kabar /. Ten electricity transformer substations and 8 km long power transmission lines were installed in 10 villages of Ak-Talaa and At-Bashy districts of Naryn oblast as part of the UNDP’s Naryn area-based development programme which is financed by the Government of the Russian Federation. The power facilities were installed in new residential areas of the villages where mostly young families reside.

"We did not have a reliable power supply system. The transmission lines were installed by local residents on their own without any safety requirements and technical standards" says Taalaikul Abdrakhmanova, local resident.

Shortage of power transformer facilities and deterioration of transmission lines repeatedly caused power failures and regular electricity interruptions. The situation worsened in wintertime when people could not heat their homes properly due to low voltage.

The situation was quite serious and UNDP helped to install 160 to 250 kWt transformers and construct eight km long transmission lines. Over 4.6 million Kyrgyz soms were allocated as part of the programme. The local energy companies assisted in installation of the power facilities.

"Improving the power supply system was one of the crucial issues for rural areas in the last 15 years. At present, more than 600 young families have access to reliable and independent power supply" noted Rysbek Shaltaev, manager of the regional development department at the Office of Plenipotentiary representative of the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic in Naryn oblast.

Naryn Area-Based Development Programme is implemented by UNDP in 30 villages of Ak-Talaa, At-Bashy and Jumgal districts. The programme is funded by the Government of the Russian Federation. The goal of the programme is to reduce poverty in Naryn oblast through the creation of conditions for balanced and sustainable socio-economic development.

The main components of the programme are:

Development of agribusiness;

Improving vocational education;

Support for local initiatives through small grants fund.
