Photo exhibition on 150 years of humanitarian action in Osh

Bishkek, 20 November / Kabar/. Within the framework of 150 years of humanitarian action celebration, the Embassy of Switzerland and the Delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in the Kyrgyz Republic are pleased to present the exhibition “War from the Victim’s Perspective” by the Swiss photographer Jean Mohr in Kyrgyzstan.

To mark the 150th anniversary of the ICRC and of the First Geneva Convention, on 20 November 2014, Ambassador of the Swiss Embassy in Kyrgyzstan Mr. Rene Holenstein, head of the sub-delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Osh Celine Bujard and Head of Plenipotentiary Representative of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kyrgyz Republic in the South Daniyar Sydykov will open an exhibition “War from the victims perspective.” The exhibition features photographs by Jean Mohr and shows the suffering of people affected by armed conflict. It focuses on the emblematic cases of Palestine, Cyprus, and Africa. Other examples illustrate the universal problems of populations directly or indirectly enduring repercussions of war (e.g. Iran, Pakistan, Nicaragua).

Jean Mohr is a well-known representative of humanist photography, who sought to understand and explain the drama of civilians trapped in belligerent situations. His images are known not only for their graphic qualities but also for their great sensitivity, respecting the victims' dignity. More than 80 exhibitions worldwide have been dedicated to his work.

Promoting and ensuring respect for International Humanitarian Law (IHL), as well as the protection of and assistance to victims of armed conflicts, is at the core of the ICRC's mandate and is one of the pillars of Switzerland's foreign policy. For the past years, the ICRC and Switzerland have launched several initiatives aimed at enabling states – among them the Kyrgyz Republic - to engage more regularly and systematically on current IHL issues.

The photo exhibition is open at the Museum of Fine Arts named after T.Sadykov and will be available until 30th of November. On 20th of November at 15:00 a special information session on ICRC’s humanitarian activities will be organized. All interested people are welcome.
The event is organized by the Swiss Embassy, Museum Elysée and the ICRC.
