U.S. Embassy concerned about allegations of torture of detainees in Kyrgyzstan

The U.S. Embassy is deeply concerned about increasing reports from human rights defenders of torture of detainees by law enforcement officials in Kyrgyzstan. Having signed The United Nations Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment in 1997, Kyrgyzstan committed to taking effective measures to prevent any acts of torture.

The U.S. Embassy calls on the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic to meet its commitments and ensure due process and fair treatment for all detainees suspected of any crimes.  Those guilty of crimes should be brought to justice, but must be given due process under the law.
