Kyrgyz Supreme Court abolishes life imprisonment of Kurmanbek Bakiyev and sentences him to 30 years in prison

 Bishkek, July 29 / Kabar /. The Supreme Court of Kyrgyzstan abolished life imprisonment of former President Kurmanbek Bakiyev and sentenced him to 30 years' imprisonment with confiscation of property, of which 5 years - to be served in prison, the rest - in a penal colony with a reinforced regime, the press service of the Supreme Court of the Kyrgyz Republic reports.

The press service said that in accordance with Article 50, paragraph 2, of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic the life imprisonment is not imposed on persons who have committed a crime at the time when they were over 60 years old. Bakiyev at the time of the offense was over 60 years old.

In 2014 Kurmanbek Bakiyev was sentenced in absentia to life imprisonment with confiscation of property. He was found guilty of the massacre of protesters in the central square of Bishkek in April 2010, when 87 people were killed and more than 400 injured.
