Vaccination of children against pneumococcal disease starts in Kyrgyzstan for the first time

Bishkek, March 18 / Kabar /. For the first time the pneumococcal vaccine is included into the calendar of preventive vaccinations in Kyrgyzstan. The vaccination of children against pneumococcal disease will start on March 22, deputy Minister of Health of the KR Oleg Gorin said today at a press conference in Kabar Agency.

According to him, it is necessary to increase public awareness of the importance of immunization and the right of every child to be protected from diseases preventable by using vaccines. "The public should know that the smallpox is eliminated, polio is under liquidation thanks to immunization. Vaccination against diphtheria and tetanus ensures the absence of these diseases in Kyrgyzstan over the past 20 years," he said.

"We introduce the vaccine against pneumococcal disease into the calendar of preventive vaccinations, which is often the cause of serious illnesses in young children, such as pneumonia, meningitis and sepsis," said Gorin.

He also noted that each year 400 - 800 cases of pneumonia are registered in Kyrgyzstan per 100 thousand population. "Pneumonia is one of the most serious problems for the health of children, and pneumococcal disease, which causes it, is also a leading cause of other diseases in all regions of the world," said the deputy minister.
