Rural settlements in Kyrgyzstan are provided with drinking water by 72%

Bishkek, December 29 / Kabar /. Rural settlements are provided with drinking water by 72%, the press service of the Ministry of Health of the KR reports.

According to it’s data, there are 1 139 thousand of water pipes in the republic. To ensure the drinking water 1 thousand 425 centralized water supply sources are used, including 159 surface water sources (11.8%). Provision of population with centralized water supply is - 84%, more than 600 thousand rural people living in 514 villages (29.1% of the total number of villages) use water from unprotected open sources.

"The urban areas are provided with drinking water by 100% except for the cities of Jalalabad (63.6%) and Talas (28%) oblasts. Provision with water supply of residential community located around the cities of Bishkek and Osh cause concern, where the percentage of provision makes 67.3 and 12%," says in the Ministry of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic.

Rural settlements are provided with drinking water by 72%, in Osh oblast - 65%, in Jalal-Abad - 59.8%, in Batken - 42.1%.

"Because of the lack of access to drinking water population of the above-mentioned areas is forced to use water from canals, ditches and other open water without pre-treatment, which leads to an increase in typhoid, acute intestinal and parasitic diseases, viral hepatitis," stressed in the Ministry of Health of the Kyrgyz Republic .

One of the problems of public health is morbidity of typhoid fever. In the analysis of the incidence of infection it found that since 2003, intestinal infections remain high, especially in Jalal-Abad oblast. 

"The local governments and state administrations do not pay proper attention to these problems," says in the report.
